The University of Alabama in Huntsville tennis teams will begin play at the Gulf South Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Tournaments on Saturday as the women's squad will take on West Alabama at 8:30 a.m. while the men's team will play Delta State at 11 a.m. Both matches are in Montgomery, Ala.
Both teams surpassed their win totals from a season ago with the women going 8-10 overall and 3-5 in GSC play to earn the No. 5 seed in the tournament. The Tigers captured the regular season contest between the two teams, but the 8-1 decision came all the way back on Feb. 26 – just the fourth match of the season for the Lady Chargers.
Jessica Groupierre earned the team's lone point of the contest with a three-set victory at the No. 1 position in singles play as she battled back from falling in the first set to capture the point.
The winner of the UAH/West Alabama match will take on the winner of top-seed West Florida and No. 8 Christian Brothers at 2:30 p.m.
On the men's side, the fifth-seeded Chargers posted a 13-10 record overall while also going 3-4 in conference play, and one of the team's setbacks was a narrow 5-4 loss at home to Delta State on March 28.
The Chargers were without Christopher Kano on that day, and UAH was only able to capture one of the doubles points – Jose Soto and Nestor Perez won 8-3 at the first position – with Kano out of the lineup. Soto also won in singles play with a 6-4, 6-3 decision at the No. 1, and Perez and Raphael Oliveira also picked up wins in singles action.
Awaiting the winner of the contest will be the No. 1 seed West Florida at 5 p.m. UWF earned a berth into the semifinals by winning the regular season title.
