HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Aiming to win its fourth straight, the No. 4 University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team is prepared to continue early conference play when it hosts West Alabama at 8 p.m. on Saturday night at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers enter the contest with a strong mark of 5-1 (1-0 Gulf South Conference), while the Tigers come to town at 3-3 (0-1 GSC).
UAH opened up conference play and knocked off West Georgia 81-71 on Thursday as the Chargers barely trailed in the game.
Despite the win, the team still turned the ball over at an uncharacteristically high rate, losing it 18 times to raise the season average to 16.5 giveaways per game. Fortunately, when the Chargers did not turn it over, they were strong offensively as they shot at a 54.3 percent clip.
Seniors
Zane Campbell and
Jaime Smith once again led the way for the Blue and White as both scored 22 in the affair.
Campbell was a stellar 8-for-9 from the floor, helping boost the team to the No. 1 spot in the GSC as far as field goal percentage is concerned with the Chargers hitting 49.3 percent of their shots, and the team has also been strong defensively as it sits second in the conference in field goal percentage defense, allowing the opposition to shoot just 39.2 percent on the season.
The Chargers hold a 42-19 advantage in the all-time series with West Alabama including a pair of wins last season. UAH hasn't lost in the series since a 79-74 setback in Livingston in the 2005-06 season, and the Tigers have not won in the Rocket City since the 1997-98 year.
West Alabama opened conference play on Thursday night also and fell by a 100-83 score at Shorter. In the loss, Sandy Underwood tallied 28 points to lead a trio of Tigers that scored in double figures. Before the loss at Shorter, the Tigers had picked up a pair of key South Region victories, knocking off Barry (71-61) and Stillman (87-72) at home.
