HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team established eight single-game program records en route to a 134-44 opening-night victory over visiting Hiwassee at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. UAH starts the season at 1-0, while the Lady Tigers fall to 0-3.
In the contest, UAH set the following single-game team records: most points in a game (134), most points at home (134), most points in a half (76), most field goal attempts (107), most field goals made (56), most rebounds (70), most assists (30) and most steals (31).
The most field goals attempted record had stood the longest with the old mark of 105 being established on Jan. 30, 1978, and the old field goals made mark of 52 had lasted since the squad made that number on Nov. 22, 1986.
Six Lady Chargers scored in double figures in the contest, led by senior
Jordan Smith's effort of 30 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Joining her in double figures were
Jasmine Hammon (20 points),
Alysse Bishop (14 points),
Josi Saunders (14 points),
Jasmyne Reeves (12 points) and
Shannon Steinert (10 points). Every player on the UAH roster saw action and scored in the contest, and all recorded at least 12 minutes.
Reeves was terrific in her debut in the Blue and White as she went 6-for-8 from the floor while also narrowly missing out on a double-double as she collected nine rebounds. Her performance on the glass was second only to
Halle Jarnagin who paced the team with 11 – including five on the offensive end.
Helping the team break the record for steals in a contest, both Hammon and Steinert collected six takeaways on the night.
Halei Lequire led the visitors on the evening as she scored 14 points.
The Lady Chargers will now turn their attention to their first road contest of the season as they travel to Montevallo on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 1:30 p.m.
