HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's tennis team fought off tough weather conditions and a strong opponent, earning a 6-3 victory over visiting Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday. Winners of three of the past four matches, the Chargers now sit at 7-5 on the season. LMU suffered just its second loss of the year to fall to 4-2.
“To be honest, we really didn't play our best tennis,” said Head Coach Daniel Finn. “I'd say neither side did as you very rarely do in cold and strong winds like we dealt with today. The major thing I'm most proud of is my team battling through the elements to beat such a strong team like LMU.”
UAH quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead as
Jose Soto and
Nestor Perez won 8-6 at the No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 point was captured by
Christopher Kano and
Raphael Oliveira in an 8-2 victory. The Railsplitters took the No. 3 doubles, however, to make it 2-1 heading into singles action.
Soto provided his squad with a 3-1 lead after he won at the No. 1 position in singles 7-6 (4), 6-4,but the visitors evened up the match by winning the points at Nos. 2 and 3.
The Chargers did not flinch and bounced back in front as Kano won the fourth singles point with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph, and the match was sealed for the hosts when
Guillermo Reyes was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at the No. 5. Oliveira produced the 6-3 final with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the No. 6 position.
After a day off on Thursday, the Chargers will return to action on Friday when they welcome Division I member Western Kentucky for an 11 a.m. match.
