HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's tennis team fell by a 6-1 score to visiting Division I member Western Kentucky on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Chargers slip to 5-4 on the season with the setback.
“All the ladies fought hard, but we just didn't execute against a team that was better than us,” Head Coach Daniel Finn said after the match.
WKU took all three doubles matches to capture the point as the teams played under Division I rules. The No. 3 duo of
Jessica Groupierre and
Kasi McDonald put forth a strong effort but ultimately fell 8-4.
Groupierre carried the strong play over into singles action and provided the team its lone point as she was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at the No. 2 position, and McDonald also made a bid for a win at the No. 6 spot but dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision.
Maria Lawton fell 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, while No. 5
Alejandra Pacheco and No. 1
Lina Carvajal both were tripped up by 6-3, 6-1 scores. Bryant fell at the fourth position by a 6-0, 6-3 score.
The team will aim to bounce back when it faces perennial Gulf South Conference power Valdosta State at home on Saturday at noon.
