BIG RAPIDS, Mich. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville (3-9-2, 2-6-0 WCHA) hockey team lost to Ferris State (7-6-0, 4-4-0 WCHA) by a score of 5-2 on Saturday night at Ewigleben Ice Arena in the conference series finale. UAH earns the series split for the second weekend in a row.
Freshman defenseman
Richard Buri got the Chargers on the board early, scoring his second goal of the season just 2:29 into the first period. Buri was assisted by
Chad Brears and
Max McHugh, giving them each four assists on the season.
UAH owned the 1-0 lead for just under ten minutes in the first period, as Ferris State's Chad McDonald evened the game at 1-1 with a goal at the 12:26 mark. The tie would hold heading into intermission.
The Bulldogs broke through the tie with a goal
by Kyle Schempp 10:05 into the second period, giving FSU at 2-1 advantage.
The Chargers battled back to tie the contest at 2-2 at the 15:38 mark with a tally from
Jeff Vanderlugt, his third score of the season. Vanderlugt was assisted by junior
Frank Misuraca and freshman
Brennan Saulnier.
Despite the 2-2 tie remaining into the second intermission, the Bulldogs were able to score quickly into third period as McDonald netted his second of the night 00:26 into the frame. Ferris State went on to add a power-play goal at 4:04 in the third by Gerald Mayhew and scored again in the final minute with an empty-net goal by Kenny Babinski to bring the game to its 5-2 final score.

Sophomore goalie
Carmine Guerriero took the loss on Saturday night after a 30-save performance against the Bulldogs. Guerriero notched 66 saves overall this weekend and has totaled 30 saves or more in seven games this season.
The Chargers managed 30 shots on goal in the loss, led by junior
Jack Prince and sophomore
Matt Salhany who each had four shots. Buri and Vanderlugt were second on the roster with three shots on goal apiece.
UAH is back at the Von Braun Center for a post-Thanksgiving Day series against No. 1 Michigan Tech, beginning on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Von Braun Center. The series will continue on Saturday at the VBC with a 7 p.m. puck drop. The first 1,000 fans in attendance to Friday's game will receive a UAH mini hockey stick courtesy of Maynard's, while Saturday's contest will feature the third trading card giveaway of the season.
