Chargers Tie Air Force 3-3 in Series Finale

USAFA, Colo. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville (1-7-2) hockey team tied Air Force (2-6-1) at 3-3 on Saturday night at Cadet Ice Arena in the series finale of the non-conference matchup.

The first period was quiet offensively between the Chargers and Falcons. Sophomore Matt Larose held strong in goal for the Chargers, stopping 12 shots in the first. In comparison, UAH totaled seven shots at Air Force's goalie Chris Truehl.

Freshman Max McHugh opened the UAH scoring effort with his second goal of the 2014-15 campaign at 13:54 in the second period, assisted by junior Jack Prince and fellow freshman Brandon Parker.

The Chargers would add to the 1-0 lead as Craig Pierce scored twice in the final three minutes of the second period at the 17:43 and 19:02 marks. Brent Fletcher and Parker were credited with assists on the initial score, while Doug Reid and Prince dished out the goal that put UAH in front, 3-0.

Air Force cut the UAH lead to 3-1 at 4:28 in the third period as Chad Demers scored, before bringing the Chargers lead within one with a goal by A. J. Reid at the 12:41 mark.

The Falcons' Cole Gunner erased the Chargers lead 14:12 into the third and brought the game to a 3-3 tie. UAH totaled seven shots in the third, but could not net the decisive fourth goal in the third period.

Both squads went scoreless in the overtime period, despite Air Force accruing three shots on goal compared to the Chargers' one.

Larose notched his second career tie on Saturday night, completing the contest with 36 saves in 65 minutes in goal.

Pierce's two goals were a single-game high for the senior, while Prince and Parker notch two assists in a game for the first time this season.

UAH come home to the VBC Propst Arena following the eight-game road swing next weekend, as the Chargers will play host to WCHA opponent Lake Superior State on Military Appreciation Weekend. Camo rally towels will be given away on Saturday, with all veterans and active military personnel receiving free admission to both matchups.
