OMAHA, Nebraska | The University of Alabama in Huntsville (3-14-3) hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie in the series finale against Nebraska Omaha (11-4-3) on Sunday evening at CenturyLink Center.
The first period was tightly contested between the Chargers and Mavericks as a scoreless tie would hold through the first 20 minutes of play, despite both teams being called for two penalties apiece in the frame.
Junior
Jack Prince broke through the scoreless knot with a power-play goal at the 5:32 mark of the second period, with helpers from freshman
Max McHugh and junior
Chad Brears. Prince's goal was his third of the season.
Later in the frame, McHugh added a tally at 11:48 in the second period to give the Chargers a 2-0 advantage, thanks to assists from Brears and Prince. UAH's 2-0 advantage held heading into the third period.
The Mavericks cut into the Chargers lead with a goal by Austin Ortega at the 5:08 mark of the third period. However, junior
Alex Carpenter scored his second of the season merely 14 seconds apart from the UNO tally to put UAH back ahead by a two-goal margin.
Omaha's Ortega was able to score his second of the game to diminish the lead to 3-2 at 9:42 of the third, which was followed by a goal from UNO's Jake Guentzel with an extra attacker to tie the game at 3-3 with 21 seconds to spare in regulation.
Both squads went scoreless through the overtime period to bring the game to its 3-3 final. UAH posted a pair of shots on goal in overtime, but neither found the back of the net.
Carmine Guerriero was solid totaling 29 saves in 65 minutes of work between the pipes. The sophomore notched his second tie of the season on Sunday.
Brears totaled his third two-point performance of the season with his two assists, while McHugh tallied his second multi-point effort of the 2014-15 campaign.
The Chargers look ahead to a home matchup against WCHA opponent Alaska Anchorage following the New Year on Jan. 2-3. UAH will be giving away t-shirts to the first 500 fans to Saturday's contest.
