UAH Blanks LSSU to Earn WCHA Series Sweep

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team cruised to a 5-0 win over Lake Superior State on Saturday night at Taffy Abel Arena, giving the Chargers their first WCHA series sweep of the season. UAH improves to 3-2-1 (2-1-1 WCHA), while LSSU slips to 2-6-0 (0-2-0 WCHA).

This was the Chargers first road sweep since Oct. 16-17, 2009 at Air Force and is the program's largest margin of victory since defeating Robert Morris 7-2 on Nov. 18, 2006.

Junior Matt Larose was equally impressive as the Chargers high-powered offense on Saturday, posting a game-high 31 saves including 14 in the UAH three-goal second period. Larose records the Chargers first shutout since Cam Talbot blanked Robert Morris on March 12, 2010.

The Chargers received a pair of multi-point performances from freshmen Kurt Gosselin and Adam Wilcox, as Gosselin had a pair of assists and Wilcox notched one goal and one assist in the victory. Gosselin totaled four points on the weekend from three goals and one assist, while Wilcox's score was the first of his career.

Much of the opening period went scoreless until Friday night's hero Cody Marooney buried his third goal of the year on a tip directly in front of the net at 18:42. Sophomores Richard Buri and Max McHugh were credited with assists on the goal.

Following the first break, the Chargers proceeded to score three goals in the second period by Brandon Carlson at 3:09, Chad Brears at 7:45 and Wilcox at 19:47 to give the Blue and White a comfortable 4-0 advantage. UAH would hold onto the lead heading into second intermission.

Defense highlighted the final period of the contest, but the Chargers were able to push across just one late goal by Tyler Poulsen – the first of his career – at 17:14 with helpers from Jack Prince and Gosselin. Prince joined Gosselin and Wilcox as a multi-point performer, as the senior also chipped in on Brears's goal in the second period.

The Chargers racked up 19 shots on goal overall on Saturday, led by freshman Cam Knight with three shots on target.

UAH returns home to the Von Braun Center next Friday and Saturday at 7:07 p.m. as Michigan Tech visits the Rocket City for a WCHA series.
