LIVINGSTON, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team's season came to a heartbreaking close on Friday night as West Florida used a penalty kick in overtime to win a 2-1 decision in the GSC Men's Soccer Championships semifinals. UAH's year ends at 10-6, while UWF moves on at 12-5.
Â
The contest marks the second this season between the two teams that ended on a PK as UAH was victorious in the regular season on a successful attempt from the spot.
Â
It was West Florida who opened the scoring in this one as Tristian Rehrig scored in the 21st minute to give the Argos a 1-0 advantage, and the tournament's No. 6 seed outshot UAH 7-3 in the first half to maintain the lead through the break.
Â
The Chargers then turned the table in the second half, outshooting UWF 7-6 and earning the equalizer when
Gunnar Oddgeir scored an unassisted marker in the 63rd minute to make it 1-1.
Â
A lightning delay would interrupt the proceedings late in the half, but ultimately the score would remain deadlocked, sending the Chargers into their second consecutive tournament game that required extra time.
Â
The Argos earned the only two shots of the overtime period, and after a UAH foul in the box, Felipe Oliveira scored on the PK in the 96th minute to lift UWF to the win.
Â
For the contest, West Florida held a 15-10 edge in shots including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal as
Michael Winstone recorded five saves in his final contest in goal for UAH.
Â
UWF also held a wide edge in corners, earning eight to UAH's two.
Â
The Chargers end the year with 10 victories, marking three consecutive seasons with 10 wins under the direction of GSC Coach of the Year
Matt Watts, and UAH is slated to return six of this year's seven leading scorers.
