Robertson's 7 RBI Lead UAH to Split with Visiting NSU

HUNTSVILLE | With a record-tying performance from Michal Robertson in the nightcap leading the way, the 12th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team earned a split on Thursday afternoon at Charger Park with visiting Nova Southeastern, winning 16-1 in the second contest after falling 10-7 in the day's first game.

UAH moves to 5-3 on the season, while NSU goes to 6-3.

With two swings of the bat – a grand slam in the second and a three-run shot in the fourth – Robertson joined four other Chargers in recording seven RBI in a contest. The feat was most recently performed by Abby MacKay who drove in seven at West Florida on March 31, 2012.

Robertson's grand slam keyed what was a nine-run second inning as the Chargers bounced back in impressive fashion from the setback in the first game. UAH quickly took the lead on a Kaitlyn Bannister double that scored a run in the first before adding the nine in the second and three runs in both the third and fourth innings.

In the victory, the Chargers pounded out 13 hits with Brianna Sullivan leading the way as the junior matched a career-best with four hits in the game, and she also scored three times while driving in another. Perri Gilbert, Bannister and Robertson also had a multi-hit game as each picked up a pair in the contest.

Sullivan's run total was matched by Robertson who also scored three times, while Abby Roberts, Gilbert and Bannister each crossed the plate twice.

The Chargers did not strike out in the contest.

Tyler Harrison (2-0), however, did pick up three strikeouts to her credit as she earned her second consecutive complete game in as many starts. The sophomore scattered four hits and gave up just one run on a solo homer in the third.

In the opener, the Sharks led throughout after posting a three-run first inning, and the advantage would grow to as large as 9-2 as the visitors scored a run in each inning after a scoreless second. UAH scored a single run in both the first and third innings before scoring twice in the sixth and three times in the seventh.

NSU outhit the hosts 15-11, though neither team helped their cause defensively as both squads committed four errors.

Robertson led the Chargers with three hits, two runs and an RBI, while Gilbert and Roberts both had a pair of hits in the contest.

Emily Glover (1-2) picked up the loss in the circle, allowing nine hits and seven runs – only five of which were earned. After Glover went four innings, Taylor Doriety came into the game in relief, surrendering six hits and three runs, but only two of her runs were earned.

UAH will now open conference play this weekend when West Georgia visits. The series starts on Friday with the first pitch of the three-game set slated for 1 p.m. at Charger Park.
