HIGHLIGHTSHUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team lost in the WCHA series opener by a final score of 2-1 to Ferris State on Friday night at the Von Braun Center. UAH slips to 8-19-4 (7-15-1 WCHA), while FSU improves to 13-18-1 (10-13-0 WCHA).
Ferris State started the game strong posting markers at 4:33 by Dom Panetta – a shorthanded score - and at 19:03 by Chad McDonald. The Bulldogs would hold the 2-0 advantage heading into the first break.
The second period was a defensive struggle between the Chargers and Bulldogs as neither team scored in the frame. Sophomore Goalie
Carmine Guerriero made a total of 12 stops in the middle period, while FSU's goalie CJ Motte made nine saves.
UAH was able to cut into the Ferris State lead when
Cody Champagne sent in his second goal of the season at 1:17 of the third period from the blue line, thanks to helpers from
Brandon Carlson and
Alex Carpenter.
However, the Chargers would go scoreless for the remainder of the period despite accruing a total of nine shots in the final 20 minutes. UAH managed a total of 19 shots on goal, led by
Jack Prince with three.
Guerriero's record falls to 8-12-3 on the season following the loss. The Montreal, Quebec native totaled 32 saves with at least nine saves in each period. The Chargers netminder benefitted from 18 blocks from the defense, with
Frank Misuraca,
Graeme Strukoff and Carlson stepped in front of three apiece.
UAH and FSU will wrap up the WCHA series on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the Von Braun Center.
