No. 7 Chargers Split with Mississippi College Saturday

CLINTON, Miss. |The No. 7 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team split on the road at Mississippi College on Saturday, falling 6-3 in the day's first game before blowing past the hosts 8-1 in the nightcap. The Chargers are now 11-4 (6-1 Gulf South Conference), while MC is 9-5 (6-2 GSC).

Kaitlyn Bannister took over the team lead in RBI with a strong day at the plate as she was 3-for-6 with five runs driven in to own 17 RBI on the season, and Brianna Sullivan kept pace at the top of the batting average ledger as she was 5-for-8 in the two games to now own a .481 average.

In the victory, Kimberly Jack (3-1) picked up her second complete game of the season, allowing just one hit while striking out three and walking none. The lone run the junior allowed came in the fifth on a groundout after she gave up the lone hit earlier in the frame.

The Chargers provided Jack with all the runs she would wind up needing in the first when Bannister roped a two-run double to go in front 2-0 in the top of the first inning, and the visitors padded the lead to 4-0 in their half of the third on a run-scoring double from Tyler Harrison and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Emily Glover.

Blowing the contest wide open, UAH put together a four-run frame in the fourth, as Sullivan, Haley Thompson, Michal Roberts and Bannister drove in runs in four consecutive plate appearances with Thompson's RBI coming on a sacrifice bunt with a runner at third while Roberts' run-producing hit was her first triple of the season.

The Chargers outhit Mississippi College 11-4 in the game as Victoria Crumpton joined Sullivan, Robertson, and Bannister with a pair each in the contest. Bannister drove in three runs in the contest, while Sullivan and Robertson both scored twice.

Hits were even in the day's first game at 7-7, but a trio of unearned runs proved to ultimately be the difference.

Harrison (5-1) was charged with the loss in the circle, going the distance and scattering the seven hits while allowing six runs – only three of which were earned as the Chargers committed three errors in the contest.

UAH grabbed the early lead in the contest as Bannister belted her second homer of the season in the second to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead, but MC responded with a five-run third before tacking on another in the fifth to go in front 6-1. Bannister then recorded a sacrifice fly and Robertson singled in a run in the sixth, but the Chargers could pull no closer than the eventual 6-3 final.

Sullivan had three of UAH's hits in the game, and Robertson had a pair as she upped her season average to .348 to rank second on the squad.

The two teams will wrap up the weekend with Sunday's rubber match. The first pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
