No. 7 Chargers Push Past Delta State on Saturday

HUNTSVILLE | The seventh-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team extended its win streak to a season-best eight with a doubleheader sweep of Delta State on Saturday, winning 1-0 and 5-3 at Charger Park. The Chargers improve to 20-5 (13-2 Gulf South Conference), while DSU slips to 12-12 (3-7 GSC).

The teams will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday with a single game slated for 1 p.m.

Saturday's first contest was a scoreless affair through the first four innings as both teams had a runner thrown out at the plate attempting to score the game's first run, but Brianna Sullivan would end the deadlock in the home half of the fifth.

Victoria Crumpton led the inning off with a single through the left side, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Haley Thompson and then stole third where she would remain with two outs in the inning. Sullivan then stepped up and singled to left to give UAH the only run the team would need in the contest.

Masterful in the circle once more, Kimberly Jack (9-1) earned the complete-game shutout – her sixth complete game and second shutout of the season – as she worked around six hits while striking out three and walking just one.

Hits in the contest were even at 6-6, and Michal Robertson and Sullivan both recorded a pair in the game.

Through Saturday's games, both Sullivan and Robertson continue to lead the Chargers in average, hitting .457 and .390, respectively.

Thompson was then the heroine of the second game as two plays with her at the plate led to four of UAH's five runs.

The Chargers scored first in the bottom of the second inning as Tyler Harrison and Abby Roberts crossed the plate after the Delta State shortstop mishandled a ball hit by Thompson, and though DSU would tie the contest with a pair of runs in the third, UAH would regain its two-run lead in the fourth.

With two outs and Crumpton at second after singling and picking up one of three steals she had on the day, Thompson deposited it over the wall in left-center for her first homer of the season to give UAH a 4-2 advantage.

Providing the home team with insurance, Tyler Harrison singled in a run in the fifth to make it 5-2, and Amber Adcock would homer for the Lady Statesmen in the sixth before Jack slammed the door shut to produce the 5-3 final.

Harrison (7-2) earned the win in the circle for the Chargers, throwing the first four innings and working around four hits and striking out four before giving way to Jack who tossed the final three frames to earn her third save of the season.
