No. 11 Chargers Win Series with Saturday Walk-Off

HUNTSVILLE | Senior Victoria Frith drove in the game-winning run in extra innings on Senior Day at Charger Park, lifting UAH to a 3-2 win over Union in eight innings. UAH improved to 34-10 (21-7 Gulf South Conference) with the victory, while the Bulldogs slipped to 26-17 (14-15 GSC).

After falling behind 2-1 when Union manufactured a two-out run in the top half of the eighth, the Chargers produced a pair of runs for themselves without recording a base hit in the bottom frame.

The inning started with Abby Roberts being plunked, and she moved all the way to third when Brianna Sullivan reached on an error while attempting to sacrifice herself. Following a Sullivan steal of second – one of 20 steals UAH recorded this weekend – Roberts tied the game when she scored on a wild pitch, and after the first out of the inning was recorded, Haley Thompson walked and stole second to put runners at second and third for the hosts.

Frith then popped up to short left, and with the Union shortstop's momentum carrying her away from the plate, Sullivan was able to tag up and score the game-winner.

Winning her fifth straight decision was Tyler Harrison who improved to 12-2 in the circle after tossing all eight innings and scattering seven hits while surrendering just the two runs. The Mobile, Alabama, native added three strikeouts for good measure.

The first of the game Harrison gave up was to lead off the contest as Emily Bennett homered to put Union ahead 1-0, and the visitors would hold that lead until the sixth inning.

In the bottom frame of that inning, Harrison helped her own cause by singling through the left side to start the rally, and Savannah Smith entered as a pinch runner for the UAH pitcher, stealing second and advancing up a bag on a wild pitch to allow her to score when Sullivan reached on a fielder's choice later in the inning.

The Chargers made a strong bid to win the game in the bottom of the seventh as Emily Glover doubled with two outs followed by a Harrison walk, but Michal Robertson's long fly to straightaway center came up just short and was caught at the track to send the game to extra innings.

For the contest, UAH was outhit by Union by a 7-6 margin with Union's Hailey Cummings the only player in the game to record two hits. For UAH, each of Frith, Harrison and Thompson reached base safely twice as Frith and Harrison both had a hit and a walk while Thompson drew a pair of free passes.

Wrapping up the 2015 home slate, the Chargers will now take on Arkansas Tech in a midweek doubleheader. The contests have been shifted and will now be played on Wednesday at Charger Park with the twinbill slated for a noon start.
