VALDOSTA, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville's stay at the 2015 Gulf South Conference Softball Championships was extended to another day as the Chargers picked up a narrow 1-0 victory over Delta State in the team's second elimination game of Friday. UAH moves to 39-13 with the victory, while DSU ends its year at 27-23.
Â
The Chargers will play Shorter at 9 a.m. CDT on Saturday for a chance to play North Alabama in the championship later in the day on Saturday.
Â
Though both teams threatened on numerous occasions throughout the contest, it was UAH who scored the lone run of the contest, and it came without the benefit of an RBI.
Â
With two outs in the fifth and
Abby Roberts standing at third after doubling and moving over a bag on a productive
Michal Robertson groundout, the junior catcher raced home as Taylor Tucker's offering bounced in front of the plate and to the backstop allowing UAH to take the lead.
Â
The double was one of a team-best two hits Roberts had in the game as she helped UAH match Delta State in hits as both teams recorded six.
Â
Numerous defensive plays helped both teams work around those hits, but none was bigger than
Haley Thompson's diving catch in the bottom of the seventh as she fully extended to rob Madison Zoeller of potential extra bases and preserve the victory for the Chargers.
Â
The play also helped lift
Emily Glover to the win in the circle as she recorded her seventh complete game and second shutout of the season while winning for the ninth time. She scattered the six hits while striking out one and walking just one.
Â
Glover was also the beneficiary of a pair of double plays including one in the first that she started herself to erase a leadoff single she had allowed, and the team also turned an inning-ending 6-4-3 with runners at first and second in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Â
Looking towards Saturday's opponent, the Chargers took two games in the three-game set when the Hawks visited Huntsville earlier in the season as UAH bookended Shorter's 5-4 win with a 4-1 win in the opener and a 3-1 victory in the series finale.
