UAH Falls in Series Finale at Ferris State Saturday

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team was tripped up on Saturday night by Ferris State with a final score of 4-1 at Ewigleben Ice Arena in the finale of the two-game WCHA series. UAH dips to 5-16-3 (3-12-3 WCHA), while FSU improves to 10-9-5 (8-7-3 WCHA).

Ferris State took the initial lead on Saturday night as Simon Denis notched a power-play goal at 13:21 for the 1-0 Bulldogs lead. Prior to the FSU goal, UAH had killed off 10 consecutive penalties in the weekend series.

UAH netminder Carmine Guerriero held strong in net despite the Ferris State tally in the first, keeping the Chargers within one with a total of 13 saves in the opening period.

The Chargers bounced back in the second period as Huntsville native Josh Kestner evened the score at 1-1 with his fifth goal of 2015-16 following a centering pass from Kurt Gosselin, who recorded his sixth assist of the season on the play.

Nearly seven minutes passed until Ferris State was able to retake the lead with a goal by Tyler Andrew at 14:31 of the second, before Brandon Anselmini extended the Bulldogs lead to 3-1 at 19:14 to give the hosts a two-goal advantage after 40 minutes.

The Chargers and Bulldogs played a scoreless first seven minutes in the third stanza prior to Chad McDonald making it a 4-1 FSU lead at 7:34 on a power play.

UAH received a power-play chance later on in the third period as Andrew Mayer was booked for cross-checking at 12:54, but Ferris State would go on to win the finale by the 4-1 final. The Chargers were 0-for-4 on the power play during the contest, while Ferris State was 2-for-9 with the man-advantage.

Guerriero's record slips to 2-12-2 with the loss, despite accruing 34 saves in the period including a game-high 14 in the second. The Montreal native has had 30 or more saves on seven occasions in 2015-16.

The Blue and White managed a total of 21 shots on goal in the contest, led by Kestner with six shots on net. Junior Cody Marooney rated second on the roster with three shots on goal.

UAH will be away from competition in the coming weekend before taking a trip to Alaska Anchorage to resume WCHA play on Jan. 29-30.
