BIG RAPIDS, Mich. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville opened up the 2016-17 campaign with a 2-1 win over No. 20 Ferris State on Saturday afternoon in the opener of a two-game, WCHA series. UAH improves to 1-0-0, (1-0-0 WCHA), while FSU slides to 0-1-0 (0-1-0 WCHA).
 
Turning Point
- After the first period ended in a 1-1 tie, sophomore Hans Gorowsky provided the game-winning tally at 9:19 of the second, his third career marker. Fellow sophomore Kurt Gosselin notched the helper on the goal.
 
Inside the Box Score
- The Chargers got on the board for the first time in the new season as junior Max McHugh notched his first marker of the year at 5:21 of the first. His goal was assisted by Josh Kestner and Brennan Saulnier.
- Ferris State tied the contest following McHugh's goal, as Mitch Maloney evened the tally at 1-1 at 9:00 of the first.
- UAH registered 26 shots on goal in the contest, led by Gorowski with five shots on target. McHugh and Kestner followed with three shots on goal apiece.
- Matt Larose improved to 1-0-0 on the season after stopping 37 shots overall in the game, including a crucial 20 saves in the third period.
 
Noteworthy
- The Chargers scored first in an opener since the 2011-12 campaign, when Justin Cseter opened scoring against Lake Superior State on Oct. 1, 2011.
- McHugh's marker was his team-leading 20th career goal.
- UAH last defeated a ranked opponent on Jan. 6, 2012 against Denver.
- This was the first time the UAH hockey program has opened WCHA play with a win.
