Late Goal by Salhany Helps UAH to 1-1 Tie Saturday

HUNTSVILLE | A late shorthanded tally by Matt Salhany helped The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team to cap off the WCHA weekend series with a 1-1 tie against No. 17 Minnesota State at the Von Braun Center on Saturday night. UAH now stands at 6-17-5 (4-13-5 WCHA), while MSU moves to 15-10-7 (13-4-7 WCHA).

Both teams opened up the contest with a scoreless frame in the first period, with the Chargers benefitting from stellar goaltending by Matt Larose who stopped a game-high 16 saves in the first 20 minutes on Saturday night.

However, after the first break, Minnesota State took the first advantage of the game as C.J. Franklin netted a power play tally at 6:20 of the second period.

The score would remain in favor of the Mavericks through the end of the second and the majority of the third period until Salhany was able to deliver his fourth career shorthanded marker and his third goal of the season at 18:57 of the third. Salhany was assisted by Brandon Parker, his sixth helper on the year, on the play.

Larose continued to excel in the latter part of the contest to allow UAH to remain in the game with 15 saves in the second and 12 stops in the third period. Larose's counterpart, Cole Huggins, notched a total of 19 in the contest.

Both squads would go scoreless in the overtime period, as the Chargers managed one shot on goal in the stanza to the Mavericks six. Larose's record now stands at 4-5-3 on the season after amassing a season-high 49 saves on the night.

The Chargers registered a total of 20 shots on goal in the tie on Saturday, with Salhany pacing the Blue and White with three shots on target. Defensively, Brandon Carlson led UAH with six blocks.

UAH hits the road for the following two series beginning with a trip Northern Michigan next Friday and Saturday at 6:07 p.m. CST.
