GULF SHORES, Ala. | The 18th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team picked up another pair of wins on Sunday, defeating Rockhurst 8-1 and then knocking off Flagler 3-1. The Chargers improve to 8-2 with conference play looming already next weekend.
Â
In the win over Flagler,
Brianna Sullivan picked up her 133rd career stolen base, breaking the UAH program record of 132 that was established by Stephanie Berry from 1998-2001. >UAH now turns its attention to its home opener and the start of Gulf South Conference action as West Alabama visits for a three-game series next weekend. The set will start with a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
Â
UAH 9, Rockhurst 1Â
The Chargers started off the final day in Gulf Shores with a strong win over Rockhurst, outhitting the Hawks 13-3 while also receiving a terrific showing from
Tyler Harrison in the circle.
Â
Harrison picked up her third win of the season, walked none, struck out four, and scattered three hits, and in the process, the junior lowered her season ERA to 1.58 while tossing her fifth complete game.
Â
UAH again received strong performances at the plate from
Abby Roberts and
Taylor Wascavage as Roberts was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Wascavage was 3-for-4 in the victory.
Â
Harrison and
Kaitlyn Bannister joined that pair with a multi-hit game as both recorded a pair in the contest.
Â
The Chargers stole 10 bags in the contest – one off of the program record of 11 – with
Savannah Smith stealing four bases along with Bannister and
Brianna Sullivan who both swiped a pair.
Â
UAH jumped out to a 2-0 lead with Smith and Roberts knocking in runs in the first inning, and another pair crossed in the third to put the Chargers up 4-0 before a solo homer by Rockhurst's Lauren Cairo cut the Charger lead to 4-1 in the top half of the fifth.
Â
The Chargers immediately got the run back, however, as a sacrifice bunt from
Jada Hayes scored pinch runner
Kelly Campbell in the fifth, and three more runs for the Chargers in the home half of the sixth more than sealed the contest for UAH.
Â
UAH 3, Flagler 1Â
Harrison earned her fifth win of the season in the finale of the weekend for UAH, pitching three strong innings of relief including five more strikeouts while giving up just two hits and an unearned run.
Â
Flagler did outhit the Chargers in the contest 8-5, but the Saints stranded 12 on base including leaving the bases loaded twice.
Â
UAH's first two runs came on passed balls as Hayes scored in the second and
Sarah Jordan scored in the fifth, and the Chargers added an insurance tally in the top of the sixth when a sacrifice bunt from Hayes knocked in Campbell for the second time on the day to put UAH up 3-0 over Flagler.
Â
The Saints would add a run in the sixth but could do no further damage.
Â
For UAH, Jordan had two of UAH's hits to log her first multi-hit game of the season, and Wascavage extended her hitting streak to seven games while taking over the team lead with a .464 batting average.
