HUNTSVILLE |
Savannah Smith belted a three-run home run with her team down to its last out of the game, capping off a thrilling comeback that lifted the No. 25 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team to a 6-5 victory over visiting Mississippi College on Sunday afternoon at Charger Park.
Â
After the Lady Choctaws (29-17, 16-14 GSC) retired the first two UAH batters to start the home seventh, UAH (35-13, 19-11 GSC) started the rally with
Jada Hayes reaching on an error and
Kelly Campbell singling into right center to turn the lineup over.
Â
Brianna Sullivan then singled through the left side and Hayes was able to slide in under the tag on a play at the plate to pull UAH to within two at 5-3, and then Smith – who was honored prior to the game in the team's Senior Day ceremony – promptly served the first pitch of her at-bat over the fence in right to spark a raucous Charger Park celebration while creating a storybook finish to the team's regular season home slate.
Â
The three-run jack for Smith is her seventh of the season, and she sits third on the team with 38 RBI on the year as she also knocked in the first run of the game, singling in Campbell in the third to give UAH a 1-0 advantage.
Â
The visitors had an immediate answer, scoring four times in the top half of the fourth, and the game would remain 4-1 until the bottom of the fifth when a pair of sacrifice bunts manufactured a run for the Chargers with
Taylor Wascavage laying down the run-producing one to make it 4-2.
Â
MC then seemed to earn an insurance run in the top of the seventh before the last at-bat dramatics to create the eventual 6-5 final.
Â
Taylor Doriety moved to 4-0 in the circle as she tossed an effective 3.1 innings of relief, allowing just three hits after entering in place of starter
Kimberly Jack.
Â
MC outhit the Chargers 10-9 for the game, and Smith and Campbell paced the team as both recorded a pair.
Â
The team will now look to build upon the momentum generated by the exciting win next weekend as UAH travels to Union for the final regular season series. The teams will play a single game at 5 p.m. on Friday before closing out with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
