Late Comeback Falls Short as UAH Drops Series Finale

HUNTSVILLE | Despite a late comeback in the third period, The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team was tripped up by visiting No. 19 Minnesota State by a final score of 3-2 on Saturday night at the Von Braun Center in the finale of the WCHA series. UAH slips to 7-15-2 (7-9-2 WCHA), while MSU improves to 13-7-2 (9-5-2 WCHA).
 
Turning Point
- After taking a 2-0 lead into first intermission, Zach Stepan provided the eventual game-winning goal at 16:37 of the second period for the 3-0 advantage and his second goal of the contest.
 
Inside the Box Score
- Minnesota State started off strongly on Saturday night as the visitors potted two goals in the opening frame by Ian Scheid at 11:30 and Zach Stepan at 13:52.
- After Stepan provided his second goal at 16:37 of the second, the Chargers were able to dig into the lead early into the third on a goal by Max McHugh at 5:32 of the stanza on an assist by linesmate Brennan Saulnier.
- Less than a minute would pass until sophomore Hans Gorowsky slimmed the Mavericks lead to 3-2 with a marker at 6:24 of the third period prior to Minnesota State taking the contest by the 3-2 final. Both Sean Rappleyea and Brandon Salerno were credited with assists on Gorowsky's score.
- UAH totaled 31 shots on goal during the loss, with sophomore Kurt Gosselin pacing the squad with five shots on goal.
- Carmine Guerriero dips to 0-5-0 on the season after totaling 22 saves and allowing a trio of goals.
 
Noteworthy
- McHugh now leads the Chargers in goals after notching his eighth goal of the season in the game.
- Rappleyea's assist was the first point of his collegiate career.
- Gorowsky has two goals and four assists in his past eight games.
 
Next Time Out
- UAH will be away from competition next weekend prior to traveling to Lake Superior State on Jan. 20-21 to return to WCHA play.
