UAH Falls in Extras in Series Finale at North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team dropped a 3-2 decision in extra innings at North Alabama on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers slip to 27-10 (15-6 Gulf South Conference), while the Lions improve to 23-12 (13-8 GSC).

UAH remains in a tie for first place in the GSC with Valdosta State as the Blazers were tripped up on Sunday by Mississippi College.

Game Changer
-UNA scored a tying run in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings and then scored the game-winning run in the eighth.

Inside the Box Score
-The Lions outhit the Chargers by a 9-6 margin, with Reagan Malone and Erin Jewell both having two-hit days for UAH.
-Kaitlyn Bannister – with a solo home run – and Brooke Miller had the other two hits for UAH.
-Bannister also walked three times in the game, while Shannon Long earned a pair of free passes to help the team total six in the game.
-UAH left 11 runners on base in the contest.
-Tyler Harrison was charged with the loss in the circle for UAH as she surrendered seven hits and the three runs while striking out three and walking none.

Key Plays
-Bannister got the Chargers on the board with her home run in the first, and the 1-0 lead for the Chargers would remain until the sixth inning.
-Before that point, the guests did turn in some fine defensive play including a heads-up, inning-ending double play in the fourth and a fantastic running catch on a foul ball by Emily Glover to end the fifth, but the Lions would manufacture a run in the bottom of the sixth to level the contest at 1-1.
-The Chargers produced a run of their own in the top of the seventh as Malone singled, moved to second on a sac bunt by Ashley Cornell, and then raced home when Jewell singled through the right side, putting UAH back up 2-1, but UNA would score in the home half of the inning and not allow UAH to threaten in the eighth before winning in the bottom frame.

Noteworthy
-The home run for Bannister is her 12th of the season, and the senior now owns 49 RBI while extending her hitting streak to eight games.
-Malone now owns four multi-hit games on the season with her third two-hit game.

Next Time Out
-The Chargers will step back out of conference play for a Tuesday visit from Miles. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m. at Charger Park.
