UAH Earns DH Sweep of Union with Dramatic Nightcap

HUNTSVILLE | The 17th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of visiting Union on Friday afternoon, winning 6-0 in the series opener before a late grand slam lifted the hosts to a 5-2 win in the nightcap. UAH improves to 35-14 (20-9 Gulf South Conference), while Union falls to 23-26 (7-22 GSC).

Next Time Out
-The two teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Saturday that is now slated for an 11 a.m. start at Charger Park.

UAH 6, Union 0

Game Changer
-Tyler Harrison went the distance for her 15th win, 15th complete game, and third shutout of the season as she worked around five hits while striking out six and walking just one.

Inside the Box Score
-The Chargers outhit the visitors by an 8-5 clip with Ashley Cornell having a team-best two in the game.
-For the second straight day, UAH displayed a strong patience at the plate as the team drew 10 walks again with each of Erin Jewell, Reagan Malone, Brooke Miller, and Harrison earning a pair of free passes.
-Two of the team's hits were for extra bases as both Kaitlyn Bannister and Jewell had a double in the game.
-Jewell reached base four times in the contest as she also was hit by a pitch.
-The Chargers stole three bases in the game with Cornell swiping a pair and Malone picking up one.

Key Plays
-UAH's first run of the game came in the home half of the first, and it should not be a surprise that it was a bases-loaded walk from Jewell that plated Taylor Wascavage to put the Chargers up 1-0.
-The score remained that way until the third when back-to-back singles from Sarah Jordan and Cornell drove in runs to make it a 3-0 advantage for the hosts.
-Another pair of runs crossed for the Chargers in the fourth when Harrison scored on a wild pitch after walking earlier in the inning, and Malone made it a two-run inning with a base hit that plated Jewell.
-The last run for UAH came in the bottom of the fifth when Cornell scored on an error to produce the eventual 6-0 final.

Noteworthy
-Cornell matched a season-high in hits with the two, registering a pair for the sixth time on the year, and she also matched a season-best with two stolen bases.
-UAH now has 183 walks on the season.

UAH 5, Union 2

Game Changer
-With the bases loaded and the heavens opening up in the bottom of the sixth, Jordan took an 0-1 pitch and sent it through the rain and over the fence down the line in left to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 advantage for the home team.

Inside the Box Score
-UAH outhit the Bulldogs by a 7-5 margin with Jordan having a pair in the game including the grand slam.
-Three other hits for the hosts were for extra bases as Jewell, Miller, and Jordan all had doubles in the game.
-Emily Glover started in the circle for the Chargers, going 5.0 innings and scattering four hits while striking out two, walking one, and allowing two runs of which only one was earned, and Harrison tossed the final two innings, giving up just one hit and striking out two while moving to 16-7 on the season.

Key Plays
-The game was scoreless through the first four innings with a triple in the fourth for Union, and the guests took a 2-0 lead in the sixth when an unearned run crossed the plate.
-The big sixth inning started when Jewell led off with a double before Miller reached on a fielding error, and the bases would be packed after Malone was plunked by a pitch.
-The next batter Wascavage poked one through the left side to score Jewell while leaving the bases loaded for Jordan who then promptly put the Chargers ahead.
-Harrison then just needed seven pitches to retire the side in order and seal the contest for the Chargers.

Noteworthy
-The four RBI are a single-game high for Jordan on the season, and the home run is her second of the season with the first coming on April 1 at North Alabama.
-UAH now has 38 home runs on the season.
