MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team saw its season come to a heartbreaking close on Friday night as the Chargers drew 1-1 with West Florida in the semifinals of the 2018 Gulf South Conference Men's Soccer Championships with the Argos advancing 4-2 on penalty kicks.
Â
UAH ends the season at 10-6-2, while UWF advances to the final at 11-3-3.
Â
The contest was scoreless through the first 43 minutes, but UWF took the game's first lead in the 44th when Rafael Godoi scored to give the Argos a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Â
The Chargers would respond immediately after the conclusion of the break, however, as
Vicente Arratia played a great ball to
Khalil Bell who used his speed to beat the keeper and level the contest at 1-1.
Â
Bell finishes his junior season with six goals which is a career high for the Opelika, Alabama, native who had tallied four goals in both of his first two seasons in the Blue and White.
Â
For Arratia, the all-GSC selection logs his eighth assist of the season.
Â
UAH would nearly go ahead in the final minutes of regulation, gaining a great chance in the 88th minute, but Bell's chance would go just wide of the goal and send the two teams into overtime.
Â
The Chargers opened the first overtime session with three strong chances, before senior goalkeeper
Myles Fullen was forced to make the last of his seven saves in the 98th minute.
Â
UWF then held UAH without a shot in the second overtime period, but the Argos were unable to place a shot on goal on any of their five attempts in the frame to send the game into the penalty shootout.
Â
In the penalties,
Ethan Wilson and
Steven Gallagher made their attempts for the Chargers, but Jacob Murray also saved a pair and watched his teammates score on each of their tries to win the shootout 4-2.
Â
For the game, UWF outshot the Chargers by a 25-10 margin including an 8-2 advantage in attempts on goal, but corners even in the game at 4-4.
Â
Friday night's game marked the final one in the careers of seniors
Guy Clennett, Fullen, and
Tucker Watts.Â
Â
During their tenure in Huntsville, the Chargers won 35 games and qualified for the GSC tournament in each of the four seasons including a pair of semifinal appearances and last year's trip to the title game.
