UAH Moves to 4-0 with Saturday Wins Over NSU, Barry

GULF SHORES, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team turned in a second consecutive perfect day at the Gulf Coast Invitational, defeating Nova Southeastern 10-8 in eight innings before knocking off Barry 9-1 in five innings. The Chargers move to 4-0 on the year with the sweep of the day.

Next Time Out
-The Chargers will wrap up play in Gulf Shores on Sunday when the team faces a pair of nationally-ranked foes: No. 23 Saint Leo at 9 a.m. and No. 25 Lenoir-Rhyne at 11:15 a.m.

UAH 10, Nova Southeastern 8
Game Changer
-After the Sharks scored five times in the bottom of the seventh to tie the contest at 8-8 and force extra innings, the Chargers answered right back with a perfect sacrifice bunt from Taylor Wascavage pushing Alaina Hampton to third so she could score on Brooke Miller's single, and Miller would score later in the inning when Shannon Long tripled to put UAH by a pair at 10-8.

Inside the Box Score
-The teams combined for 20 hits with each side having 10 in the game, and eight different players accounted for UAH's with Miller and Long both recording a pair in the contest.
-The Chargers had four hits for extra bases as Amber Hammonds, Kiara Akles, and Miller all homered in addition to Long's triple.
-Akles led UAH with three RBI in the game, while both Miller and Hammonds knocked in a pair of runs.
-Miller also crossed the plate a team-best three times.
-Earning the win in relief in the circle was Layton Murphy who tossed 1.1 innings and gave up just a hit while striking out two, and Akles struck out six in her 6.2 innings of work.
-UAH stole four bases in the game with each of Hammonds, Wascavage, Miller, and Long swiping a bag.

Key Plays
-NSU scored the game's first run in the top of the first, but UAH responded with a run scoring when Miller reached on an error in the second before Akles belted three-run homer to center to make it a 4-1 lead for the Chargers.
-The Sharks scored two runs of their own in the bottom frame to pull within one, but UAH quickly got them right back as Hammonds hit a two-run jack in the top of the third to put the Chargers ahead 6-3.
-The score remained that way until the sixth when Miller hit a solo shot to make it a 7-3 game, and UAH picked up its eighth run of the contest in the top of the seventh when Jada Hayes had a sac fly to plate Regan Malone.
-After the big bottom of the seventh from NSU and the two runs from the Chargers in the top of the eighth, the Sharks gave up an out on a sac bunt before Murphy struck out the next two batters with the runner at third to seal the contest.

Noteworthy
-The four stolen bases is a season-high for UAH on the young year, and it is the most steals in a game since recording five against Union on April 22 of last year.
-The three home runs in the contest are the most since the Chargers hit three against Florida Tech last season on March 6.

UAH 9, Barry 1
Game Changer
