No. 11 UAH Wins Twice on Saturday

DAHLONEGA, Ga. | The No. 11 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday at the Cottrell Foundation Loyal Blue Classic hosted by North Georgia, winning 13-2 in five innings over Southern Wesleyan before avenging Friday night's setback with a 10-5 victory over McKendree. The Chargers are now 10-5 on the year.

-UAH will face host No. 3 North Georgia on Sunday 11 a.m. to wrap up play in the Peach State.

Game Changer
-The Chargers scored five times in the second and six more times in the third to seal the contest early.
 
Inside the Box Score
-UAH pounded out 15 hits in the contest while limiting Southern Wesleyan to just three, and the Chargers were led by Shelby Booker who had three hits and three runs as one of five Chargers who had a multi-hit game.
-Reagan Malone also scored three times and had a pair of hits, while each of Jada Hayes, Alaina Hampton, and Mackenzie Nutt also had two hits in the game.
-Both of Malone's hits were doubles, and Ava Jacobs and Ashley Cornell also had a two-bagger, while Hampton tripled in the game and Amber Hammonds had a home run to give the Chargers six hits for extra bases.
-Each of Hayes, Hampton, Hammonds, and Cornell drove in a pair of runs in the contest.
-Layton Murphy went the distance in the circle for UAH, surrendering just three hits and two runs in the five innings while striking out a pair in earning the complete game victory.
 
Key Plays
-UAH opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first as Nutt plated Malone when she reached on a fielder's choice and Kiara Akles singled in Booker to make it a 2-0 game, and the Chargers took complete control of the game when they scored the five runs in the second with Malone, Hayes, and Hampton all driving in runs in the inning.
-Hayes then knocked in the first run of the six-run third that also featured the run-scoring triple from Hampton, the Hammonds two-run homer, and the two-run double from Cornell.
-Southern Wesleyan tallied its two runs in the top of the fourth to create the eventual 13-2 final.
 
Noteworthy
-The home run is the first of the year for Hammonds, and the team now has seven different players who have hit one on the season.
-After being held without a hit on Friday night, Booker responded with her fourth three-hit game of the season.
The three runs for Malone match her season high.
-Murphy earns her third win of the season with the victory in the first game.

Game Changer
After seeing McKendree come from behind and tie the contest on a pair of occasions, the Chargers put together a four-run fourth inning that helped UAH earn the victory.
 
Inside the Box Score
-The Chargers outhit the Bearcats by a 10-9 margin with each of Malone, Hayes, Hampton, and Shannon Long recording a pair in the contest.
-Hampton and Nutt both drove in a pair of runs in the victory, while Malone, Hayes, Long, Booker, and Nutt all crossed the plate twice.
-Hayes and Long both recorded doubles, Booker and Long had a triple each, and Nutt belted a home run in the contest.
-The Chargers again exhibited great patience against the McKendree pitching staff, drawing eight walks including a pair each from Malone, Booker, and Akles.
-The Chargers stole eight bases in the game with half of those coming from Malone.
-Murphy picked up her second win of the day in relief, scattering four hits over 4.1 innings of work, allowing just one run.
 
Key Plays
-UAH grabbed an early lead, with Hayes singling in Malone, Booker scoring on a wild pitch, and Nutt hitting a sac fly to plate Hayes while giving the Chargers a 3-0 lead in the top half of the first, but the Bearcats battled back and scored twice in the first and again in the second to tie it at 3-3.
-Nutt then homered to put the Chargers up 4-3, but that advantage was short-lived as McKendree responded with a run of its own in the third to knot things up at 4-4.
-After Malone singled with one out in the top of the fourth, Booker would triple to put UAH back in front, and Hayes followed that up with a double to score Booker and make it a 6-4 lead.
-The scoring in the fourth ended when Hampton singled to center to score Hayes and Nutt and lift the Chargers to an 8-4 advantage.
-After Murphy dialed up a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom frame, the Chargers got another run in the top of the fifth on a sac fly from Hayes, and Murphy worked around a jam and stranded a pair of runners in the home half to keep it 9-4.
-McKendree scored its fifth and final run of the game in the sixth, and Long tripled and scored on an errant throw in seventh to produce the 10-5 final.
 
Noteworthy
-Nutt's home run is her third of the season, and she now owns a team-high 17 RBI.
-Hampton is the third Charger to reach double figures in RBI as she now owns 10.
-Booker leads the team with 18 runs for the season.
-Murphy improves to 4-2 with the victory.
