No. 16 UAH Wins Series Opener at Montevallo on Saturday

MONTEVALLO, Ala. | The 16th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team used a big fourth inning to open its series at Montevallo with a 6-2 win on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers improve to 36-12 (20-7 Gulf South Conference) with the victory, while the Falcons fall to 23-26 (11-17 GSC).
 
Turning Point
-UAH scored all six of its runs in the top of the fourth inning to help secure the win.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Montevallo picked up seven hits compared to six for the Chargers in the contest.
-Each of UAH's hits came from six different players including Shelby Booker, Amber Hammonds, and Kiara Akles who all had doubles.
-The Chargers also drew four walks including a pair from Jada Hayes.
-Akles also earned the win in the circle, going 6.1 innings while scattering six hits and allowing just the two runs while striking out three.
-Sydnee Uhlman tossed the final two outs of which one was a punch out.
 
Key Plays
-UAH did not gets it first hit until the fourth when Hammonds led off the inning with her double which was followed by a walk from Hayes, and Hammonds would score on a two-bagger from Akles.
-Later in the inning, Taylor Wascavage would single in both Hayes and Akles, and the scoring would continue when Ashley Cornell reached on an error which also allowed Alaina Hampton to score.
-An RBI double from Booker and a bases-loaded walk from Hayes rounded out the scoring for the Chargers as the guests sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning.
-The Falcons would homer in the fourth and added another run in the bottom of the seventh to create the 6-2 final.
 
Noteworthy
-Akles is now 10-1 on the season in the circle, matching Layton Murphy for the staff lead in victories.
-The Chargers turned their league-leading 25th double play of the year in the game.
-Wascavage is now has six hits in her last 12 at-bats, and she has four RBI in her past four games.
-Booker is now tied for second on the team with 11 doubles on the year.
-The RBI for Hayes on the bases-loaded free pass is her team-leading 50th of the season.
 
Next Time Out
-The two teams will close out the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader that is slated for a 12 p.m. start.
