No. 7 UAH Drops Series Finale at West Alabama on Saturday

LIVINGSTON, Ala. | The No. 7 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team dropped the series finale on Saturday, falling 7-6 to host West Alabama. The Chargers slip to 31-11 (15-6 Gulf South Conference), while the Tigers improve to 22-17 (11-9 GSC).
 
Turning Point
-After the Chargers had stormed back to erase a six-run deficit, Kailey Hunt recorded a sac fly in the bottom of the seventh to provide UWA with its second walk-off of the series.
 
Inside the Box Score
-UWA outhit the Chargers by a 9-8 margin.
-Ashley Cornell recorded a team-high two hits in the game to go along with a sacrifice as she finished 2-for-2 with a run.
-Both Alaina Hampton – on a two-run homer – and Mackenzie Nutt drove in a team-best pair of runs.
-Sydnee Uhlman was charged with the loss in the circle after going 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit and the winning run, while Layton Murphy went 5.1 innings giving up eight hits and six runs of which just three were earned.
 
Key Plays
-West Alabama threatened to get on the board in the first as they loaded the bases with one out, but Murphy wiggled out of the jam to keep the game scoreless until the third.
-UWA then crossed the plate six times in the bottom frame of the third to go up 6-0.
-The score remained that way until the top of the fifth when Shannon Long and Shelby Booker both drove in runs before Hampton's two-run homer pulled the Chargers within two at 6-4.
-The visitors tied the game in the top of the sixth when Nutt drove in a pair on a base hit to make it 6-6, and Uhlman kept the game level in the bottom of the sixth when she entered the game and immediately dialed up a double-play ball with runners at first and second and just one out.
-West Alabama then turned a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh into the winning run as a sac bunt followed by the sac fly by Hunt produced the 7-6 final score.
 
Noteworthy
-Hampton finishes the weekend with seven RBI in the series, improving her season total to 29.
-This is Nutt's sixth multi-RBI game of the season.
 
Next Time Out
-The Chargers will step out of conference play on Tuesday, staying on the road when they travel to Georgia College. The doubleheader is slated for a 3 p.m. CT start.
