MELBOURNE, Fla. | The 16th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team saw its postseason run come to a close on Friday as the Chargers fell 6-4 to host Florida Tech before dropping a 6-3 decision in nine innings to Mississippi College.
Â
UAH ends the season at 39-17.
Â
In the elimination game, the Chargers were down 3-1 after MC's Brianna Caldwell hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh, but
Alaina Hampton and
Jada Hayes would drive in runs in the bottom of the inning to knot the contest back up at 3-3.
Â
UAH then threatened to win the game in the eighth when
Amber Hammonds led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a productive out by
Mackenzie Nutt, but a pair of ground outs would stand her there. The Choctaws then scored three times in the visiting half of the ninth and worked around a two-out single by
Jada Hayes to seal the contest.
Â
Layton Murphy tossed the first 6.2 innings of the game, scatting six hits before giving way to
Sydnee Uhlman who would take the loss by surrendering the go-ahead runs in the ninth.Â
Â
Both Nutt and Hampton finished the contest with a pair of hits.
Â
In the day's first game, second-seed and host Florida Tech knocked off the Chargers by a 6-4 scoreÂ
Â
UAH grabbed the first lead of the game as the team scored twice in the second with Nutt doubling in
Kiara Akles before Nutt scored on a sacrifice fly from
Taylor Wascavage.
Â
The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the third when FIT would go ahead with three runs in the inning, and the Panthers tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 4-2 game.
Â
The Chargers would leave a runner on in both the fifth and the sixth innings, and Florida Tech pushed its advantage out to four in the sixth when it plated before a 1-2-3 double play ended the inning to send the game into the seventh at 6-2.Â
Â
UAH would not go down with a fight, however, as
Reagan Malone led the inning off with a pinch-hit single before Wascavage reached on a fielder's choice and
Shannon Long singled to third to load the bases.Â
Â
Ashley Cornell then singled down the left field line to score both Malone and Wascavage to cut the Charger in deficit in half, and though UAH would advance runners to second and third, the team would be able to claw no closer than the 6-4 final margin.
Â
Akles was charged with the loss in the circle as she went 5.1 innings while scattering six hits.
Â
Each of UAH's seven hits came from seven different players.Â
Â
The contests marked the final ones for UAH's trio of seniors in Hammonds, Hayes and Wascaage. The Chargers won 160 games and reached the NCAA tournament all four seasons including a Super Regional appearance last season.
