PENSACOLA, Fla. | The 15th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team was eliminated from the 2019 Gulf South Conference Softball Championships on Saturday, falling by a SCORE-SCORE score to West Alabama in a contest that featured a substantial rain delay. UAH slips 38-15 on the season, while UWA improves to 30-22.

The Chargers will now await their NCAA tournament fate as the field for the 2019 Division II Softball Tournament will be announced on Monday at 9 a.m. in a selection show set to broadcast on NCAA.com.Â

In the last set of regional rankings, UAH was ranked No. 3.

UAH outhit the Tigers by a 9-3 margin, but UWA capitalized on five errors to score three unearned runs in the contest.

The Chargers logged four of those hits in the first inning and scored the game's first run when
Kiara Akles singled into left to score
Amber Hammonds, but UWA would take advantage of three UAH miscues in the bottom half of the inning to go up 3-1.

UAH would leave two on in the second and three in the third, and West Alabama would eventually notch its fourth run of the game on another error in the bottom of the fifth to go up 4-1.

The Tigers then scored twice in the bottom of the sixth before the heavens opened up, forcing a delay of six hours before the final out would be recorded in the inning, and UWA then retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to finish the game.

Shelby Booker and
Ashley Cornell both had a pair of hits for the Chargers in the contest to lead the team offensively.

Layton Murphy was charged with the loss after allowing just two hits in five innings of work while surrendering five runs of which just one was earned, and she also struck out four batters.
