ROME, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team dug itself a significant hole on Friday night, but showed great resolve in coming from behind twice to ultimately win by a 4-3 score in overtime on the road at Shorter. The win – UAH's second-straight overtime victory – improves the Chargers to 7-5-2 (4-4-1 Gulf South Conference), while SU slips 2-10-0 (0-9-0 GSC).
Last weekend's hero against West Florida proved to be the hero once again as
Connor Young scored with just 36 seconds left in the first overtime period to lift the Chargers to the victory.
That result seemed to be perhaps out of reach in the early goings on as the Hawks stunned UAH with a third-minute goal before scoring again in the 24th to go up 2-0.
The 28th minute would see the visiting side pull back into the contest as
Kieran Rowe scored his first collegiate goal to produce what would end up being the halftime score at 2-1.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half in the 55th, Sander van der Sluijs would assist on what ended up being Young's first goal of the game, tying the contest at 2-2, but the hosts would regain the advantage in the 70th.
The 3-2 lead for Shorter was short-lived, however, as
Jose Bannwart scored his second of the season in the 74th from
Aaron Chavez to tie the contest, setting up the potential for the winner from Young in the 100th.
The Chargers dominated the shot counter, firing off 23 shots to Shorter's nine, and the team held an 8-4 advantage in attempts that were on target.
The victory lifts UAH into seventh in the GSC standings with 13 points, and the team is just three points behind both Lee and West Florida who sit tied for fourth with 16 points.
That creates a big-time match-up on Sunday when Lee comes to Huntsville. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Charger Park.
