Chargers Play to 3-3 Draw in Quarterfinals, CBU Advances on Penalties

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team played to a 3-3 draw with visiting Christian Brothers in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Gulf South Conference Spring Championship Series, but CBU advanced to the next round by winning the penalty kick shootout 6-5. UAH ends the year at 1-1-3, while the Buccaneers move on to the semifinals at 2-2-1.

The Chargers appeared to be heading towards the semifinals themselves, leading 3-1 late, but in the 86th minute Chandler O'Dwyer would pull the guests within one before scoring again in the 90th minute to knot the contest at 3-3 and force overtime.

The two teams would combine for just three shots in the two overtime periods, sending the contest into penalties, and CBU's Wayne Davis would pick up two big saves in the shootout to send his team to the next round of bracket play.

It was Christian Brothers who struck first on the afternoon, with Maximillian Galizzi scoring in just the eighth minute of the game, and that 1-0 score would hold until the 30th when Rafa Moreno set up Aaron Chavez who leveled the contest at 1-1.

UAH would then go into the halftime break with even higher spirits as Sander Van der Sluijs scored off an assist from Andreas Tsimon in the 43rd to put the Chargers in front 2-1, and the momentum carried over into the start of the second 45 minutes as Connor Young's pass sparked a great run from Michael Weston who fired it past Davis in the 51st to give UAH a 3-1 advantage.

Shots in the contest were even at 16, with the Chargers holding a 9-7 edge in attempts that were on target, and it was Moreno who led the home side with three shots. Both Van der Sluijs and Cahvez had a team-high two that were on goal.

Giancarlo Martinez stopped four shots in goal for UAH.

The contest was a chippy one with a total of 53 fouls being called in addition to six cautions being issued.
