No. 22 UAH Sweeps West Alabama in Friday Doubleheader

LIVINGSTON, Ala. | The No. 22 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of host West Alabama on Friday, winning 6-3 in the opener before coming from behind to win 5-3 in the nightcap. The Chargers are now 16-7 (11-6 Gulf South Conference), while the Tigers fall to 11-12 (7-10 GSC).

-The two teams will wrap up the series on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.

Inside the Box Score
-Hits in the game were even at 6-6.
-Reagan Malone led the Chargers with a pair of hits, while Shelby Booker had two RBI in the contest.
-Each of Ashley Cornell, Kiara Akles, Kaylee Vaught, and Malone also had an RBI in the game.
-Layton Murphy went the distance in the circle, scattering six hits in earning the complete-game victory.
 
Key Plays
-West Alabama opened the scoring in the second to go up 1-0 early.
-The game remained that way until the Chargers had a big fourth inning, with Vaught doubling in the tying run before Malone pushed the Chargers in front with a single that made it 2-1.
-Two more runs would score when Booker reached on an error, and a sac bunt from Cornell plated the final run of the inning to give the Chargers a 5-1 advantage.
-UWA would get two of the runs back in the home half of the fourth, but the hosts could pull no closer as Akles created the 6-3 final by singling in a run in the top of the seventh.

-UAH outhit the Tigers by a 7-6 clip.
-Each of Booker, Akles, and Lila Young had two-hit games.
-Alaina Hampton homered in the game, while Booker had a double to give the Chargers a pair of hits for extra bases.
-Five different UAH players had a walk in the game, and four different Chargers had a stolen base.
-Grace O'Berry pitched all eight innings, striking out five and walking just one in earning the victory.
 
Key Plays
-The game was scoreless until the fourth when Young got the Chargers on the board with a base hit up the middle that plated Akles, but the lead would be short-lived as UWA scored three times in the home half to go up 3-1.
-The guests found themselves still facing that deficit in the top of the seventh, but a groundout from Cornell would score Thompson who led the inning off with a walk and a Mackenzie Nutt sent home Booker to tie the game at 3-3.
-O'Berry worked around a leadoff single in the home half of the seventh, allowing Hampton's blast to center to start the eighth to put the Chargers in front 4-3.
-Booker provided UAH with insurance later in the inning as she doubled in Young to create a 5-3 advantage, and O'Berry stranded a runner in the bottom half to give the Chargers the victory.
 
Noteworthy
-Hampton's home run is her third of the season, and she now has 14 RBI.
-O'Berry moves to 5-1 in the circle, while Murphy improves to 6-4.
-UAH is now 78-12 all-time against the Tigers including a 36-7 mark in Livingston.
