Tough Battle Results in 0-0 Draw with Florida Southern

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville opened the 2021 men's soccer campaign on Thursday night, playing to a 0-0 draw against visiting Florida Southern at Charger Park. Both teams begin the year at 0-0-1.

The Chargers built up a wide 18-4 edge in total shot attempts in the 110 minutes, and it was Shalev Keter who led the way four UAH with four attempts. Keter had one of the home side's efforts that was on target, and he was joined Justin Alacantara, Ethan Wilson, and Vicente Arratia in logging a shot on goal.

Florida Southern had a pair of attempts on target, forcing UAH keeper Giancarlo Martinez to make a save in both the first and second halves of the game before the Chargers held FSC to zero attempts in both of the overtime periods.

In fact, UAH did not permit the Mocs to take a shot in the final 37 minutes of the contest.

For Martinez, the clean is his second in the Blue and White with his first also coming in a 0-0 draw against Lee on March 1 in the Gulf South Conference Spring Championship Series.

Indicative of UAH's strength going forward in the contest, the Chargers earned eight corners in the game compared to just two for FSC, and three of the eight came as the hosts looked hard for the game-winner in the first overtime period.

A total of 35 fouls were called in the game, and the referee went to the book seven times including sending off a FSC player in the 109th minute.

UAH returns to action on Sunday when another Sunshine State Conference opponent visits the Rocket City, and kick-off against Eckerd is slated for 5 p.m. Admission to the contest is free for all supporters courtesy of Alabama Credit Union.
