ALBERTVILLE, Ala. | The No. 23 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team picked up a pair of wins on the first day of the 2022 Chillout presented by Marshall County Tourism & Sports, defeating Tuskegee 6-1 before turning around to knock off Trevecca Nazarene in five innings. The Chargers are now 5-1 on the season.

UAH will continue play in Albertville on Saturday when the squad takes on Spring Hill at 10:30 a.m. and battles Southern Indiana at 1 p.m.

The Chargers would earn a victory in the day's first game when the team outhit the Golden Tigers by a 9-4 margin as seven different Chargers had a hit in the contest including
Kaylee Vaught and
Kiara Akles who both had a pair.

Vaught was one of three Chargers who had a double in the game as she was joined by
Alaina Hampton and
Eve Mallard, and both Hampton and
Mackenzie Nutt had a pair of RBI to lead the Chargers.

Shelby Booker reached twice and scored a team-best two times.
Â
Vaught's double was the third of the season for the junior, and Booker has now scored a team-best six times.

The Chargers used three different pitchers and received strong efforts from each, including starter Maddie Tankersely who went three innings, allowed one hit and no earned runs while also striking out a pair. Earning the win in relief was
Ava Jacobs who moved to 1-0 on the year as she tossed a pair of one-hit, scoreless frames, and
Shelby Waldrop scattered a pair of hits and struck out one in her two innings of work.

A sac fly from Nutt in the first started the scoring, and another sac fly – this time off the bat of
Heather Thompson – along with the RBI double from Vaught gave the Chargers a 3-0 lead after two.

Tuskegee earned its run – an unearned tally – in the top of the third, but Nutt would single in a run in the third to make it 4-1 before Hampton doubled in a pair in the fourth to create what would be the eventual 6-1 final.

UAH 9, Trevecca Nazarene 1 (5 inn.)

UAH picked up its first run-rule victory of the season in the victory of Trevecca Nazarene, outhitting the Trojans by a 13-3 clip.

Both Vaught and
Lila Young had three hits in the game, and two of Young's were doubles which helped the Chargers total seven two-baggers in the contest.Â

Hampton also had a pair of doubles in the game.
Â
Young drove in a team-high three runs and Vaught knocked in a pair, and both Nutt and Hampton scored twice.
Â
Vaught now has five three-hit games in her career, and it is the third such showing for Young's tenure in the Blue and White.

Layton Murphy (2-1) tossed the complete game in the circle, and she allowed just three hits and the one run while striking out four.

The Chargers scored in each of the five innings, starting with an RBI single from Young in the first, and UAH would go on top 3-0 after both
Sadie Thompson and Vaught drove in a run in the second.

Vaught pushed in another run in the third, and an error in the fourth would allow the Chargers to take a 4-0 advantage.Â

After TNU scored its run in the top half of the fifth, another error would make it 7-1 before Young doubled in a pair to end the contest with 9-1 victory for the Chargers.
