No. 23 UAH Finishes Perfect Weekend at 2022 Chillout

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. | The No. 23 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team made it a perfect weekend at the 2022 Chillout presented by Marshall County Tourism & Sports, defeating Kentucky Wesleyan 11-1 in five innings to close out the event. UAH is now 8-1 on the season, while KWC falls to 1-4.

This is UAH's best start since the 2014 season when the team also went 8-1 in its first nine games.

The Chargers pounded out 11 hits in the contest including four for extra bases, while the UAH pitching staff limited the Panthers to just two singles.

Kaylee Vaught turned in her second three-hit game of the weekend and she tripled in the game, while both Shelby Booker and Gracie Green had a pair of hits of which one was a double for Green.

Logging the other doubles for the Chargers were Eve Mallard and Alaina Hampton, and Hampton finished the weekend with five two-baggers which leads the team on the season.

Vaught and Hampton both knocked in three runs in the game, giving Vaught seven for the Chillout while Hampton recorded 10.

Vaught also scored three times.

Maddie Tankersley tossed the first 2.2 innings, allowing just the two hits while striking out three, and she was relieved by Megan Shurtz who moves to 3-0 after not allowing a hit in 2.1 innings while also striking out three.

Hampton's double in the first started the scoring, plating the first of three runs the Chargers would score in the inning, and her sac fly was followed by Vaught's two-run triple and RBI single from Shelby Booker in the third to produce an 8-1 advantage. Green and Vaught then both drove in runs in the fourth and another scored on an error to create what would be the 11-1 final.

UAH now steps into conference play and will face a stiff test out of the gate as it travels to No. 7 Valdosta State for a three-game set. The series starts with a 1 p.m. CT doubleheader on Saturday.
