Chargers Pick Up 6-3 Win Over Union on Saturday

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team picked up its first conference win of the season on Saturday, beating Union 6-3 at Sand Mountain Park. The Chargers are now 9-4 (1-3 Gulf South Conference), while UU falls to 5-9 (2-2 GSC).

The two teams will complete the series on Sunday in Albertville with a doubleheader slated for 1:15 p.m.

The Chargers won on Saturday despite being outhit 7-4 by the Bulldogs.

Four different players were responsible for the hits including Kaylee Vaught who had a team-high three RBI from the top of the lineup. Shelby Booker had a hit and an RBI in the game, while Sadie Thompson drove in a run on one of the two walks she would earn on the day.

UAH exhibited great patience at the plate, compiling eight free passes in the game, and the Chargers would swipe eight bags in the contest including a pair from Booker.

Layton Murphy went the distance in the circle, scattering seven hits and allowing three runs while striking out four in moving to 3-3 on the year.

The game was scoreless through the first three innings, and after Union got on the board in the top of the fourth, the Chargers would respond with a four-spot in the home half of the inning.

The tying run was forced in when Thompson walked with the bases loaded to plate Alaina Hampton, and UAH would take the lead on Vaught's grounder to second that scored Jada Henderson. An infield single from Booker and a throwing error by Union would lead to the other two runs to make it 4-1.

A two-run triple for the Bulldogs in the fifth pulled the visitors within one at 4-3, but Vaught would provide the Chargers with insurance as she singled in Gracie Green and Heather Thompson in the sixth to create the 6-3 final.
