Chargers Gallop Past Delta State for 10-1 Win Friday

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team won its sixth straight game in its first contest of the year at Charger Park, defeating visiting Delta State 10-1 to start the conference series. UAH improves to 13-4 (4-3 Gulf South Conference), while DSU falls to 7-9 (2-3 GSC).

The two teams will wrap up the series on Saturday with a doubleheader at noon.

UAH capitalized on five Delta State errors while also picking up eight hits to the three for the guests.

Kaylee Vaught had a big day for the Chargers at the top of the lineup, going 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI while also scoring two times.

The four RBI give Vaught 23 on the season which is nearing her season total of 29 from a year ago, and the total leads the team and ranks second in the GSC.

Shelby Booker also had a two-hit game, while Sadie Thompson had a double and drove in two runs. Each of Alaina Hampton, Gracie Green, and Thompson all scored twice.

In the circle, Layton Murphy allowed just the three hits in five innings while giving up just one run, and she struck out six. She moves to 5-3 on the season and now has 58 career victories which is one off sixth all-time at UAH.

The Chargers got on the board in the first when a passed ball allowed Booker to score, and the team would then bust the contest wide open by taking advantage of three Delta State errors in the second to score four times and go up 5-0.

DSU got its lone run of the game in the third, and the Chargers would respond by sending 10 batters to the plate in the third, scoring five times to take the commanding 10-1 lead.

Murphy then tossed a 1-2-3 fourth and worked around a leadoff walk in the fifth to wrap up the game.
