DAHLONEGA, Ga. | The No. 23 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader at No. 16 North Georgia on Wednesday, falling 7-2 in the opener and 5-3 in the nightcap. UAH is now 15-7, while UNG improves to 17-8.
Â
The Chargers will be back in action on Tuesday when the squad travels to Miles for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Â
North Georgia 7, UAH 2
The Nighthawks used a big fourth inning to propel themselves to the victory as Haley Cummings hit a grand slam to turn a 3-0 into a seven-run advantage.
Â
UNG outhit the Chargers by a slim 9-8 margin in the contest, with
Kaylee Vaught and
Kiara Akles both having a pair in the game for UAH. The guests also drew four walks, but the team would ultimately leave 10 on base in the game.
Â
Lawren Hayes had the team's only hit for extra bases as she had a double that also drove in a pair of runs.
Â
In relief of starter
Layton Murphy,
Jessie Cole pitched the final 2.1 innings for UAH, working around just one hit and three walks while not allowing a run to score.
Â
North Georgia grabbed an early lead with a run in the first before tacking on another in the second. After a scoreless third, they plated their third run in the fourth before the big swing of the bat from Cummings increased the home team's advantage.
Â
The Chargers would then get on the board in the sixth when Hayes pinch hit and knocked the double that scored
Mackenzie Nutt and
Lila Young with her one-out double.
Â
North Georgia 5, UAH 3
In the nightcap, the hosts built up a 7-5 advantage in hits for the game, with
Shelby Booker and
Gracie Green both going 2-for-3 in the contest.
Â
Green joined Akles in having a double, while Booker had a triple and a couple of RBI.
Â
The triple for Booker is her first of the season, and it is also the eighth of her career which ranks just outside the top 10 in UAH history.
Â
Grace O'Berry started in the circle for the Chargers, scattering five hits and giving up three runs in taking the loss, while
Megan Shurtz pitched the final two innings while allowing a pair of hits and two runs.
Â
The Nighthawks again had a big inning in the contest, this time scoring three times in the third, and the home team added onto its lead with a run in the fifth to make it a 4-0 game.
Â
Akles then doubled in Booker in the sixth, but that run was immediately responded to by UNG in the sixth to create a 4-1 score.
Â
The scoring was rounded out in the top of the seventh when Booker tripled in Hayes and
Eve Mallard to create the eventual 5-3 final.
