UAH Finishes Weekend Sweep of West Georgia with 8-5 Win

HUNTSVILLE | Making it victories in 10 of its last 11, The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team completed the series sweep of West Georgia on Saturday with an 8-5 victory at Charger Park. The Chargers improve to 27-14 (15-9 Gulf South Conference), while UWG falls to 11-29 (4-19 GSC).

UAH has also now won six straight.

The seven hits the Chargers had on the day were evenly distributed up and down the lineup with Gracie Green's 2-for-3 day leading the way.

Green was one of five UAH players to drive in a run on the day as she, Kaylee Vaught, Kiara Akles, and Lawren Hayes each had an RBI, while Shelby Booker picked up a pair in the contest.

UAH also exhibited an unselfish and patient approach, recording three sac bunts – one each from Booker, Jada Henderson, and Sadie Thompson – while also adding four walks and a pair of hit by pitches to the seven hits.

For good measure, Thompson stole a pair of bags, with Vaught also picking up a steal in the contest.

Layton Murphy picked up her 11th win of the season, tossing 7.0 innings and allowing just five hits while striking out six.

The six Ks move Murphy into fifth all-time at UAH with 355 career strikeouts, moving past Alex Lewis who had 350 for her career.

UAH fell behind early on this day, finding itself chasing a 5-0 deficit after the first inning, but the team responded quickly by scoring four times in the second inning. Green's single to left in the third then tied the contest at 5-5 before Vaught pushed the Chargers in front at 6-5 with her single in the inning that proved to eventually be the difference maker.

After a scoreless fourth and fifth, a run scored on an error and Akles knocked in another for some insurance in the sixth.

UAH will be back at Charger Park on Thursday when the Chargers play their final non-conference games of the season in a doubleheader against Lincoln Memorial. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
