UAH Blows Past MC to Complete Series Sweep

HUNTSVILLE | Completing the series sweep, The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team pushed past visiting Mississippi College by a 10-5 score on Sunday afternoon at Charger Park. The Chargers improve to 20-13 (10-8 Gulf South Conference) with the victory, while MC falls to 14-17 (7-13 GSC).

This is UAH's second series sweep of the season.

The top of the Charger lineup remained on fire, accounting for nine of the team's 14 hits as Kaylee Vaught went 4-for-4 with three runs, Shelby Booker went 3-for-3 with three runs, and Kiara Akles went 2-for-3 with a homer, four RBI, and a run scored.

Both Alaina Hampton and Gracie Green finished the contest with a pair of RBI.

Layton Murphy earned the victory in the circle to move to 7-7 on the year, while Megan Shurtz shut down the MC offense with three innings of two-hit, scoreless ball that included a pair of strikeouts in earning her first collegiate save.

UAH wasted no time taking the lead as Vaught singled and Booker walked to start the home half of the first, and Akles followed that with a loud homer to center that gave the Chargers an early 3-0 lead.

The home run for Akles marks her team-best fifth of the season, and she now has 29 RBI on the year including 12 in the team's last seven games.

The Choctaws would battle back, tying the game in the third and taking the lead at 5-3 with a pair of runs in the fourth, but the hosts would answer in their half of the inning.

After Lawren Hayes, Vaught, and Booker all strung together singles to start the inning, Akles would get her fourth RBI on a sac fly that plated Hayes, and a wild pitch would allow Vaught to scamper home and tie the game at 5-5.

Hampton then singled in what would prove to be the winning run as Booker scored to make it 6-5.

After a scoreless fifth, UAH would cross the plate four times with an error allowing Vaught to score after she doubled to start the inning, Hampton knocked in a run with a sac fly, and Green singled in a pair to create what would prove to be the 10-5 final.

UAH will be in action on Tuesday when the team travels to Young Harris for a doubleheader that is slated for a noon CT start.
