HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team closed out the regular season in run-rule fashion on Sunday, beating visiting West Alabama in six innings by a 9-1 score to extend its winning streak to 14 games heading into the postseason. UAH improves to 35-14 (21-9 Gulf South Conference), while UWA falls to 26-23 (15-15 GSC).
Â
UAH now turns its attention to the 2022 Gulf South Conference Softball Championships, and full details concerning match-ups and game times will be announced when available.
Â
In her final game at Charger Park,
Layton Murphy tossed a gem, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out four and walking none, and in doing so, she earns her 68th victory which ties her with Whitney Gilbert for fourth all-time at UAH in career wins.
Â
Murphy was not the only senior to have a big day in their final contest at home.
Â
In the sixth inning alone,
Eve Mallard had an RBI pinch-hit,
Shelby Booker tripled and scored, and
Kiara Akles ended the game with a base hit that plated Booker.
Â
The triple is Booker's 13th in her career which ties her with three others for the most in program history.
Â
Mackenzie Nutt drove in a run and scored, while
Alaina Hampton had a key sacrifice that helped lead to Nutt scoring in the second.
Â
Underclassmen also turned in some strong showings on the day as
Sadie Thompson doubled and scored three times while also knocking in a run,
Lawren Hayes had a two-run triple.
Kaylee Vaught added a sac fly.
Â
The Chargers finished the contest with eight hits.
Â
After a scoreless first, Thompson drove in Nutt before Hayes had the triple in the second to put UAH up 4-0, and the hosts would take a 5-0 lead after a productive groundout from Nutt in the fourth. UWA then scored its run in the sixth before the Chargers put up four in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early.
