Chargers Win 1-0 Thriller Over AUM at GSC Tournament

OXFORD, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team remained perfect at the 2022 Gulf South Conference Softball Championship, picking up a thrilling 1-0 win over top-seeded and nationally-ranked No. 4 Auburn Montgomery on Thursday evening at Choccolocco Park. UAH improves to 37-14, while AUM slips to 39-9.

UAH will now play the winner of Montevallo and Lee at 6 p.m. on Friday with a chance to advance to the championship game.

Layton Murphy was once again stellar in the circle, holding the Warhawks to their third-lowest hit total of the season at four while also striking out four and allowing just one walk.

Murphy moves to 17-7 on the season and lowers her ERA to 3.08, and she now has 70 wins for her career.

The impressive pitching performance – which gave UAH its first 1-0 victory since March 25, 2016 – allowed Alaina Hampton's blast that hit the brick column adorning the scoreboard with quite some force in the second inning to stand as the winning swing of the bat.

The home run is Hampton's eighth of the season and gives her 37 RBI on the year.

Murphy stranded seven runners in the contest, including a pair in the fifth when the Warhawks had runners at first and second before she induced a flyout to Vaught in left, one of five putouts the UAH left fielder would have in the contest.

Other big plays including a popper to short with a runner at second to end the AUM first and a pop up to first followed by a strikeout to end the inning with a runner at second in the second.

Giving the Charger faithful one last moment of nervousness, AUM got a runner to third with two outs in the seventh, but Lila Young at short made a quick throw to first for the 21st and final out of the game.
