OXFORD, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville saw its terrific run at the 2022 Gulf South Conference Softball Championship come to a conclusion on Sunday as the fourth-seeded Chargers fell to top-seeded Auburn Montgomery 7-4 in the championship game. UAH slips to 38-15, while AUM improves to 43-9. 
 
UAH will now await word on a potential NCAA tournament berth as the Chargers were No. 7 in the regional rankings heading into the conference tournament. The selection show which will announce the national tournament field is set to air at 9 a.m. on Monday.
 
Following the game on Sunday, three Chargers earned a spot on the all-tournament team including pitcher Layton Murphy, outfielder Kaylee Vaught, and first baseman Kiara Akles.
 
Sunday started off excellently for UAH as Murphy stranded three AUM runners in the top of the first, and the Chargers promptly followed that up with back-to-back two out doubles in the bottom of the first as Alaina Hampton knocked in a pair before trading places with Lila Young to make it a 3-0 early lead.
 
The Chargers then made it a 4-0 advantage in the bottom of the second when Vaught belted a solo shot for her sixth home run and 42nd RBI of the year.
 
UAH would turn its second straight inning-ending double play in the top of the third, but the Warhawks would strike for four in the fourth to tie it before going in front with a run in the fifth. They added another pair in the top of the seventh to create what would be the 7-4 final.
 
AUM finished the contest outhitting UAH by a 14-5 margin.
