UAH Softball Splits Doubleheader with Montevallo

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Alabama Huntsville softball rallied to claim a split in a doubleheader against Montevallo at Charger Park on Friday, taking Game Two 4-2 after dropping Game One 2-1. The results improved UAH to 19-6 on the season, while Montevallo moves to 19-5.

Game One: Montevallo 2, UAH 1
UAH jumped into the late stages of a tight contest but fell short in the opener, 2-1. Montevallo struck first in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout from Bentlee Stiner, scoring Taylor Rogers. The Chargers got on the board in the sixth inning when Allie Yeary's RBI groundout brought home Brittany Slaten, but that would be their only run of the game.

Despite the outcome, the Chargers saw strong efforts at the plate from Ballentine, who went 2-for-3 with two hits, and Slaten, who went 1-for-3 with a run and a triple.

Game Two: UAH 4, Montevallo 2
UAH bounced back in the nightcap with a 4-2 victory to even the series. The Chargers struck first in the bottom of the first inning as Kylie Ballentine doubled to drive in Jill Cockrell, giving UAH an early 1-0 lead. Brittany Slaten added a key RBI double in the third inning, scoring Cockrell, and Ballentine contributed on an RBI fielder's choice in the fifth, pushing the lead to 3-1. UAH tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Gracie Ashley scored a run following a first-base error. Montevallo managed a late RBI in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough to catch the Chargers.

Pitcher Katie Bracken was dominant, tossing all seven innings and striking out 14 while allowing just five hits and two runs for her sixth win of the season. Offensively, Jill Cockrell led the team with a 2-for-3 performance, scoring three runs, while Ballentine added two hits, two RBIs and a double to help secure the comeback.

UAH will close out the series against Montevallo on Saturday, March 7, at Les Stuedeman Field with a 12 p.m. first pitch.
