CLINTON, Miss. | The UAH Chargers softball team split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader with Mississippi College on Friday at the MC Softball Complex, earning a 7-6 comeback victory in game one before falling 7-0 in the nightcap.
UAH now stands at 29-15 overall, while Mississippi College moves to 25-15-1 on the season.
Game One: UAH 7, Mississippi College 6
Mississippi College jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning and added two more in the third to take a 4-0 advantage. The Chargers responded in the fourth inning with a surge of offense to even the score. Alexa Douthitt put UAH on the board with a solo home run, and Mia Brown followed with another solo shot to cut the deficit in half. RBI singles from Baylee Darby and Brittany Slaten completed the four-run inning and tied the game at 4-4.
UAH took control in the fifth inning, capitalizing on defensive errors by Mississippi College. Gracie Ashley and Darby each reached on errors that brought in runs, and Jill Cockrell added an RBI single to give the Chargers a 7-4 lead. Mississippi College plated two runs in the sixth to narrow the margin, but UAH held on for the one-run victory.
Lydia West earned the win in relief, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing just two runs on two hits while striking out two.
Offensively, Douthitt and Brown led the Chargers each with three hits and an RBI, including a home run. Slaten and Cockrell each added two hits and an RBI in the win.
Game Two: UAH 0, Mississippi College 7
Mississippi College carried their late game momentum into the second game. The Choctaws opened with a run in the first, added another in the second, and broke the game open with a four-run third inning to build a 6-0 lead. Alexa Douthitt and Baylee Darby accounted for UAH's only hits of the contest. Mississippi College added an insurance run in the sixth inning to secure the 7-0 victory.
Megan Shurtz took the loss after allowing six runs on six hits in two innings. Brylie Waechter provided solid relief, pitching four innings and allowing just one unearned run while striking out four.
UAH will play the decisive game of the series against Mississippi College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
