HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The UAH softball team completed a doubleheader sweep over Union on Friday. The Chargers opened the day with a 2-1 victory and followed with a 3-0 win.
UAH improves to 27-14 overall (11-9 GSC), while Union drops to 13-22 overall (6-14 GSC).
Game One: UAH 2, Union 1
The Chargers struck first in the third inning when Brittany Slaten tripled down the left-field line, driving in Baylee Darby to make it 1-0. UAH extended the lead on a sacrifice fly by Mia Brown that scored Slaten, giving the Chargers a 2-0 advantage. Unionn managed to score a run in the seventh inning on a Paige Garetson single, but UAH held on for the 2-1 win.
Katie Bracken earned the complete-game win, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six. Brittany Slaten led the offense with a triple and a run scored, while Mia Brown added an RBI with her sacrifice fly.
Game Two: UAH 3, Union 0
UAH's offense struck early in the bottom of the first inning when Hannah Temple singled, driving in both Brittany Slaten and Jill Cockrell to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead. The scoring continued in the sixth inning on an RBI groundout by Alexa Douthitt that brought in Gracie Ashley, extending UAH's lead to 3-0. Union was unable to generate any offense, leaving five runners on base over the course of the game.
Megan Shurtz earned the complete-game shutout, allowing five hits while striking out six and walking just one. Temple led the Chargers at the plate with two hits and two RBIs, while Gracie Ashley, Brittany Slaten, and Alexa Douthitt each contributed key hits to secure the win.
The Chargers will wrap up the series against Union on Saturday, April 4, at 12 p.m. at Les Stuedeman Field.
