HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team (1-0) returns to action Saturday, Nov. 19, as the squad takes on Benedict (1-0) in Columbia, S.C. in a non-conference tilt. Tip-off from the HRC Arena is slated for 1 p.m. (CST).
With a win over Benedict, the Lady Chargers would be starting the season with a 2-0 record for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
The Lady Chargers enter the contest after handling its season-opener against Fisk, earning a 105-60 victory – the fifth-highest point total in school history. UAH forced the Lady Bulldogs into 40 turnovers, including a school-record 27 steals. Freshman
Juanice Newton added a double-double in her first collegiate game with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore
Jordan Smith poured in a game-high 17 points to lead the Lady Chargers.
Benedict also opened its 2011-12 campaign with a victory, defeating Lynn by a much closer score of 59-57. The Tigers needed a second-half effort to earn the win, outscoring Lynn 38-30 in the frame. Santera Grooms led Benedict to victory with 17 points and eight rebounds, while teammate Bridget Williams joined Grooms in double-figure with 12 points.
Historically, the two schools have met just once. Benedict claimed the game on Dec. 13, 2010 by a score of 81-78 and holds a 1-0 advantage in the series.
