Lady Chargers Head to UWF Thanksgiving Classic

Live Stats

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. –
The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team is 2-0 for the first time since 2001-02 and returns to action as the squad travels to Pensacola, Fla. for the UWF Thanksgiving Classic.

The Lady Chargers will play two games in the tournament at the UWF Field House, first facing 2010 NCAA Division II Champion Emporia State (1-1) on Friday, Nov. 25, at noon (CST). On Saturday, UAH will meet Henderson State (3-0) at noon.

With a win over Emporia State, the Lady Chargers would be starting the season with a 3-0 record for the first time in over 20 years - the 1990-91 squad opened its campaign with a 5-0 record.

UAH enters the contest after earning its first road victory of the year over Benedict, 78-67. Sophomore Jasmine Hammon led the Lady Chargers with her first double-double of the year and sixth of her career, tallying 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The Blue and White continue to play with a swarming defense, forcing opponents into 61 turnovers on the year already and taking full advantage, scoring 76 of its 183 points (41.5 percent) off the mistakes.

Emporia State dropped its season-opener on the road but has since rebounded with a home victory over Rockhurst in the team's most recent outing. The Lady Hornets are led in scoring by Heather Robben who has poured in 26 points in two games.

Henderson State, however, has begun its season with a 3-0 record and is outscoring opponents 219-145 this year. The Lady Reddies currently have three players scoring in double-digits per game, led by Joycelyn Taylor with 38 points scored on the year. Sheay Longstaff and Cheree Freeman are averaging 11.7 and 11.0 points per game, respectively.

While this is the first meeting between Emporia State and UAH, the Lady Chargers have met Henderson State on the court 10 times. The Lady Reddies hold a significant advantage over UAH in the series, claiming nine of the 10 contests, including last year by a score of 99-65. UAH's lone win came during the 2009-10 season by a score of 88-66.
